Corey Conners played well in April at Harbour Town finishing tied for fourth in the RBC Heritage. Back in South Carolina at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Conners played even better Thursday afternoon. Conners, 39th in the world rankings, fashioned a five under 67 for the first round lead in the 103rd PGA Championship. Conners had big moments on the greens with birdie putts of 55, 33 and 31 feet.

Conners has a two shot lead on six others including former champions Brooks Koepka and Keegan Bradley. Defending champ Collin Morikowa and former champion Phil Mickelson are in a large group another shot back at minus two.

The 2012 PGA Championship winner at the Ocean Course, Rory McIlroy, struggled to a 75, his worst opening round ever in a PGA Championship. World #1 Dustin Johnson struggled from the outset of his round and finished the day with a four over 76 placing him tied for 97th place.
