David Bennett loves football. He proved that through an illustrious coaching career at Catawba College and Coastal Carolina. But his love for the sport does not trump his feelings about what should happen with high school football this fall. The athletics director for Lexington District 1 says Covid-19 makes it too dangerous to play the sport in its traditional spot on the calendar.
That’s why his district presented a proposal to the SCHSL calling for football and other “high risk” sports to be moved to January and later, and “low risk” sports like baseball and softball to be moved to the fall.
The proposal was shot down by the SCHSL Executive Committee last week, and Wednesday a decision on an appeal was tabled by the league’s Appellate Panel until August 10th.
Wednesday night Bennett joined us on SportsTalk to take a deep dive into his feelings about the plan.
Keep it shot down!
