South Carolina defensive line coach Travian Robertson offered DT Darius Simmons (6-3 306) of Cairo, GA in January, and now the next move is to get Simmons on campus for his first visit. That should happen sometime during spring practice. It’s a relationship that is still in the developing stage.
“It’s a pretty good relationship,” Simmons said. “I love the D-line coach there. We talk every other day. He checks on me and I check up on him. He started recruiting me around mid-season. He found me on my X account, and we’ve been texting ever since. He came out to my weight room, and he finally offered me.”
Last season Simmons had 50 tackles with five sacks and 10 tackles for loss. He caused five fumbles and recovered five. Robertson was no doubt impressed with what he saw on film.
“He likes my aggressiveness,” Simmons said. “I’m very aggressive. It takes two to block me or you ain’t blocking me at all.”
Simmons is looking forward to that first visit to USC so he can learn more about the program and the school. for now, all he can judge the Gamecocks on is what he’s seen on TV and in videos.
“I like the atmosphere, and they produce pretty good D-linemen,” Simmons said. “Now they’ve got some great D-linemen up there. It’s just a family atmosphere that I can see that they have through videos they have sent me.”
Simmons plans to set an official visit with the Gamecocks. He’s also looking at Memphis, Georgia State Troy and Cincinnati for possible visits. He has also been offered by Western Kentucky, Arkansas State, Florida A&M and USF. He visited Florida on February 1st.
He does not plan to make his decision until later in his season, perhaps on his Senior Night.
