Delaware defense does a number on Coastal Carolina in the second half to preserve a 22-14 win over the Chanticleers (AUDIO)

NEWARK, Del. – Coastal Carolina held a seven-point lead during the second quarter, but Delaware scored the final 15 points to hand the Chanticleers a 22-14 setback Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.

Coastal struck first with 7:51 remaining in the opening quarter. Starting at its own 5-yard line, the offense needed just five plays to travel 95 yards. Deuce Bailey capped the drive with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Goldie Lawrence, giving the Chanticleers a 7-0 lead.

After Delaware evened the score early in the second quarter, Coastal answered with a nine-play, 72-yard scoring drive. Bailey connected with Colton Hinton for a 27-yard touchdown to put the Chanticleers back in front, 14-7, with 8:19 remaining in the half.

The Blue Hens responded in the closing seconds of the second quarter, scoring on a 2-yard run before converting a two-point attempt to take a 15-14 advantage into halftime.

Neither team scored during the third quarter as Coastal’s defense kept the Chanticleers within one point. The Chants forced punts on Delaware’s first two possessions of the second half and held the Blue Hens to 93 rushing yards for the game.

Delaware extended its lead following a turnover on a punt return midway through the fourth quarter. On the next play, Nick Minicucci connected with Sean Wilson for a 36-yard touchdown, pushing the margin to 22-14 with 8:19 remaining.

Coastal responded by driving 62 yards to the Delaware 13-yard line, but the Blue Hens stopped the Chanticleers on fourth down with 4:07 remaining and ran out the clock.

The Chanticleers (1-2) finished with 385 yards of total offense, including 250 through the air and 135 on the ground. Bailey completed 16-of-26 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns without an interception while adding 42 rushing yards.

Jevon Edwards led Coastal’s rushing attack with 49 yards, while Dominic Knicely added 44. Lawrence’s 62-yard touchdown reception led the receiving corps, while Clayton Coppock Jr. recorded 52 yards on two catches. Hinton finished with three receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown.

The Chanticleers return to Brooks Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 24, to host Liberty. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
