Can Clemson match their 2024 run in the NCAA Tournament?

If you are a fan of the Clemson Tigers, you’ve had a bit of fun this Winter. While the team hasn’t quite set the world of basketball on fire, they have been extremely steady during the 2024/25 season.

Not only has their record qualified them for March Madness play, but it has seen them head to the tournament with a bit of momentum on their side. Are the Tigers good enough to have a successful March Madness Tournament? Clemson could reasonably occupy a high position in your bracket according to YouBet.com.

How does March Madness work?

March Madness features the 68 of the best teams in the country. The way that “best” is determined can get very complicated. The country is divided into thirty-one conferences. Those are then shuffled around almost endlessly year after year, which further muddies the issue.

Clemson finished in a tie for second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 18-2 record.

Has Clemson won the tournament before?

The Clemson Tigers have never won March Madness, but they have fared pretty well in the past. Last year, they made it to the Elite Eight. They did the same in 1980, though that was under a slightly different playoff format.

Their record doesn’t exactly shout “Probable 2025 champions,” but it is impressive enough to make them contenders this year. Particularly in view of their recent success, as the Tigers won seven of its last eight.

What do we mean by successful?

Simply qualifying for March Madness is a form of success. If you are a Clemson fan, however, just making the tournament isn’t necessarily anything to get excited about.

Clemson has entered the tournament as a 5-seed and will play McNeese State in the first round.

For a tournament that truly is quite mad, the standings wind up being weirdly predictive of outcome. Despite the single-game elimination format that adds a lot of potential volatility to the outcome, upsets are relatively rare.

Low-ranked teams occasionally pull a rabbit from their hats. Sixteenth-ranked teams have twice eliminated top-seeds. Interestingly enough, both occurrences happened in the last few years.

This could potentially indicate that college basketball is slowly and subtly changing in a way that makes postseason play a little friendlier to underdogs. It also might just be a fluke.

Success, in this case, would be making it to the Sweet Sixteen. Final Four is unlikely, but possible.

Keep in mind that Clemson has faced some challenging teams and come out on top with victories over Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky. Despite the recent loss of Dillon Hunter to injury, they are getting solid minutes out of their bench and are in good form heading into the postseason.

So, who will win?

If you can answer that question with any serious accuracy you’ll stand to make quite a bit of money this Spring.

Right now, Auburn, Houston, Florida and Duke are in excellent shape to challenge for the championship.

If you are a betting person, wagering on the top seed is generally the best move you can make. Certainly, a little bit of mayhem might see a couple of solid-looking teams make an early exit. That’s part of the fun.

However, to take a practical view of the situation, you really just need to consider the odds. Top-ranked teams have earned their position. Upsets are fun, but never very likely.

The Tigers could find their way to the Elite Eight. Anything beyond that would require a historic performance. Those don’t come around very often.
