Two-out error leads to five-run tenth inning for Miami in an 8-3 win over Clemson Thursday night (AUDIO)

  • Miami scored five runs with two outs in the top of the tenth in handing Clemson its fifth straight loss. The Hurricanes loaded the bases with two away against Clemson reliever Dion Brown. Daniel Cuvet hit a 0-2 pitch down the third base line that Tryston McCladdie misplayed for an error. Three runs scored as the ball rolled down the line and into the bullpen.
  • Joe Allen replaced Brown (2-1) and gave up an RBI double to Alex Sosa and an RBI single to Derek Williams to make it 8-3 Hurricanes.
  • Clemson had a one-out single in the bottom of the tenth by Jay Dillard, and he took second with two outs. But he was stranded when Bryce Clavon struck out to end the game.
  • Miami built a 3-0 lead against Clemson starter Aiden Knaak with one run in the first and two in the third.
  • The Tigers scored a run in the fifth, then tied the game in the sixth. Luke Gaffney reached on a one-out error and moved to second on a single by Ty Dalley. Dillard drove in Gaffney with a single, and then Dalley scored on a single by Ty Lichtenberger.
  • The Tigers had runners on the corners with one out and a chance to take the lead, but reliever Bradley Coon struck out Clavon, and Jack Crighton hit a line drive to second for the final out.
  • In the seventh, the Canes had second and third with two away, but a strikeout ended the inning. McLaddie walked with one out in the bottom of the inning, but was picked off before Jacob Jarrell popped up to third.
  • Miami threatened again in the top of the eighth, getting a runner to third with two outs, but Brown induced a foul fly ball to right for the third out. Clemson then had its chance with first and third and two outs in the bottom of the inning. Clavon hit a fly ball to right to end the threat.
  • Miami had a two-out baserunner in the top of the ninth but couldn’t score him. Clemson then had a golden opportunity for a walk-off win. The Tigers put runners on the corners with two outs, but Gaffney struck out on three pitches to send the game to the tenth.
  • Knaak went 4.2 innings for Clemson, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out six. Four relievers limited Miami to four hits and one earned run the rest of the way.
  • Lichtenberger led the 10-hit Clemson offense with three hits.
  • Clemson is now 18-9 overall and 1-6 in the ACC. Miami is 20-5 and 3-4. Game two of the series at DKS will be Friday night at 8:00 PM.
