UNC 9-USC1 Game Summary

TRUIST FIELD, CHARLOTTE
  • South Carolina scored int he top of the first, and then North Carolina scored the next nine runs over the next seven innings.
  • An RBI single by Jake Randolph with two outs in the top of the first put the Gamecocks up 1-0. That lead didn’t last long as the Tar Heels responded in the bottom of the inning with a two run homer by Gavin Gallaher off of starter and loser Connor Chicoli (1-2).
  • The Gamecocks threatened in the second and fourth innings getting two on in each frame, but a double play ended the second, and a fly out and a strike out ended the fourth.
  • The Tar Heels loaded the bases against Logan Prisco in the fourth with two outs, but a ground ball got Prisco out of the jam and kept it a 2-1 game. Prisco was the Gamecocks’ best pitcher on the night scatter four hits and allowing one run while striking out five over 4.1 innings.
  • North Carolina made it 3-1 in the sixth on a two-out wild pitch from Cullen Horowicz which allowed a runner to score from third.
  • The seventh was a disaster all the way around for USC. Beau Hollins singled with one out but was caught stealing before Tyler Bak flew out for the final out. The Tar Heels put runners on second and third with one out, and a wild pitch by Hudson Lee on ball four scored on run. Riley Goodman entered and was greeted with a squeeze bunt to third for a run. He then uncorked a wild pitch for another run. A double and a single plated two more runs before Cooper Parks were brought in. He walked his first batter, hit his second and then yielded a sac fly for the Tar Heels sixth run of the inning in which they sent 11 to the plate.
  • The Gamecocks went down in order in each of their last two at bats. They finished with five hits, all singles, three walks, one hit batter, and they struck out 14 times.
  • Reliever Walker McDuffie (5-1) earned the win as he allowed just one hit over 2.2 innings and struck out seven.
  • The Tar Heels beat the Gamecocks for the second straight season and lead the all-time series 66-40-1. The Tar Heels have now won six of the ten meetings against the Gamecocks in this annual series played at Truist Field in Charlotte, where the attendance was 2960.
  • USC is 13-13 and opens a series at Georgia on Friday night. 13th ranked UNC is 21-4-1 and will play this weekend at Notre Dame.
