Northern Kentucky 3-USC 2 Game Summary

  • After hitting a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th in the second game of yesterday’s DH, KJ Scobey found himself in a similar circumstance on Saturday. However, this time, Scobey struck out with the bases loaded to end the game
  • Reese Moore hit his first home run as a Gamecock to tie the contest at 1-1 in the 5th inning. The Norse scored two runs in the top of the sixth off of Cooper Parks for a 3-1 lead.
  • The Gamecocks left two runners on base in the seventh and one in the eighth. In the ninth, the Gamecocks had runners on second and third with one out when Luke Yuhasz hit a grounder to short to score a run to make it 3-2. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Scobey, who struck out swinging on a 1-2 pitch.
  • USC left 10 men on base, going 0-for-7 with RISP.
  • The top four batters in USC’s order (Bak, Harman, Scobey, and Lizama) were a combined 2-of-14.
  • Brandon Stone pitched four innings in his first start of the year for the Gamecocks. He allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts in earning a no-decision. Cooper Parks suffered the loss out of the bullpen, giving up two earned runs on two hits in 1.1 IP.
  • Alex Valentin, pitching on “Valentine’s Day,” was solid out of the Gamecock bullpen, closing out the game with six strikeouts in 3.2 IP.
  • USC (2-1) travels to Spartanburg on Tuesday night to face Wofford at Fifth Third Park.
