DUNES GOLF AND BEACH CLUB: Gamecocks golfer Nathan Franks held his own against a field of professionals in his first PGA Tournament appearance, Thursday, carding a four-under 67 in the first round of the Myrtle Beach Classic.
Franks qualified for the tournament by winning “The Q at Myrtle Beach” earlier in the week. Franks, a three-time SEC Golfer of the Week, is tied for 15th and four strokes back of leader Mackenzie Hughes (-8) heading into Friday’s second round. Defending champion Chris Gotterup shot a four-under 67, leaving him in good position to challenge again.
Bill Haas (-3), another Palmetto State player, sits at T32 after coming in with eight straight pars. Jay Haas, Bill’s 71-year-old father, who enjoyed a professional career spanning more than 40 years, has stepped in to caddy for his son this week.
Trace Crowe (Easley, Hilton Head Christian Academy) finished a stroke back of Haas at -2, as did Jackson Byrd, son of former Clemson golfer Jonathan Byrd. Jackson, who has committed to play at Clemson, is ranked no. 2 in the Rolex American Junior Golf Association. The elder Byrd, playing two groups ahead of his son, bogeyed his final hole of the day to finish at +1.
Another former Tigers’ player, Carson Young (-1) and former Gamecock Matthew Nesmith (E) are playing in the group with Jonathan Byrd and will tee off together a few minutes before 8 a.m., Friday. Kevin Kisner (South Aiken High School) finished at even par and is scheduled to begin second round play just before 7 a.m., Friday.
Good scoring conditions are expected to continue through the tournament despite the threat of rain.
