South Carolina says “no mas” to more men’s basketball this season, opts out of the NIT

The season is officially over for USC men’s basketball coach Lamont Paris (Ryan Bethea)

There will be no more basketball for the USC men’s basketball team this season. Jordan Kaye of The State late Sunday afternoon broke the news that the Gamecocks would not accept the automatic invite to the NIT thus ending their dismal season.

The only reason South Carolina had an opportunity for the NIT despite their 12-20 record was a change in the tournament’s selection process that provided exemptions for SEC and ACC teams not in the NCAA Tournament.

In the case of the SEC, only USC and LSU did not make the NCAA Tournament. By virtue of the league being one of the top 12 conferences in the metrics, those two teams would have a spot in the NIT.

The Gameoccks opted to pass on theirs.
