Clemson holds off Liberty 6-4, Gaffney and Ciufo go deep to help Tigers win 14th straight (AUDIO)

BJ Bailey lowered his ERA to 0.59, Tuesday (Clemson Athletics)

Clemson built a considerable lead in the early innings and managed to withstand a Liberty rally in a 6-4 win at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Tuesday.

After falling behind 1-0, Luke Gaffney and Andrew Ciufo hit two-run homers to help the fifth-ranked Tigers surge into the lead. Clemson added a run in the third before Cam Cannarella’s fourth-inning RBI single accounted for the Tigers’ final run.

BJ Bailey (2-0, 0.59) relieved fellow southpaw Brendan Bennett with two outs in the second and held Liberty to a single run (unearned) over the next four frames. Liberty was able to plate a pair of runs against Joe Allen before Lucas Mahlstedt (S, 0.71) got the final four outs to nail down Clemson’s fourteenth straight victory.

The pitching performance was again a strength for Clemson. The Tigers’ staff hasn’t surrendered more than four runs in a game since Winthrop scored seven runs in Clemson’s 20-7 victory on February 25th.

Clemson (16-1) and Liberty will wrap up their two-game series at 4 p.m., Wednesday.
