Release from The Citadel
The Citadel President Gen. Glenn Walters, USMC (Ret.), ’79, announced the new hire on Wednesday, Feb. 19, after a nationwide search that included nearly 100 high-caliber candidates.
“I am excited that Art Chase is returning to The Citadel to lead our athletic teams after 25 years at Duke University,” Walters said. “He is exceptionally qualified, familiar with our mission and prepared to make all our programs and athletes successful.”
Chase served as the Assistant Sports Information Director at The Citadel for two years in the 1990s before working at Presbyterian College in a similar role. He returned to The Citadel for three years as the Sports Information Director before departing in 2001 for the Duke University athletic department.
At Duke, he acted as the Associate Sports Information Director (2000-04), Sports Information Director (2005-10), Assistant Director of Athletics/Sports Information (2011-13), Assistant Director of Athletics/External Affairs (2013-17) and Associate Director of Athletics/External Affairs (2017-18) before being elevated to his current position as the department’s Senior Associate Director of Athletics / External Affairs in 2018.

At Duke, Chase worked with a hugely successful lacrosse program that won multiple national championships and nine ACC championships. Over the last three seasons, he also had management responsibilities with the second-winningest period in Duke football history.
The Citadel’s athletic director search committee worked with Parker Executive Search, an external search firm, to promote the position and narrow the field to a small number of candidates.
Chase replaces Mike Capaccio, who retired after joining The Citadel in 2012; he was named athletic director in 2018.
