DE Tyree Weathersby (6-4 250) was one of the prospects who came through the Shane Beamer camps last week and walked away with an offer. Weathersby performed well for defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey and defensive ends coach Sterling Lucas, and the Gamecocks joined several other SEC schools in pursuit of the talented pass rusher.
“South Carolina, I really liked it,” Weathersby said. “I was talking to the D-line coach, and he’s been trying to get me up there for about a month. He wanted the head coach to see me. That went very well. I was one of the top players there. Overall, I liked the experience. The thing I liked the most was the indoor field.”
Weathersby played in seven games while dealing with a nagging hand issue, the result of breaking a bone in his hand as a sophomore. He estimated he made over 60 tackles with over 10 sacks. Coming off the edge is what he loves to do, and he wants recruiters to understand that.
“I’m an ends guy. I’m not moving anywhere, not going to be a down tackle or a linebacker,” Weathersby said. “I might stand up a little bit, but I’m definitely going to be an edge guy, just like I am right now in my high school career. I can definitely go inside, too, if I choose to. I can be versatile. Coaches like my get off of course. That’s what most the coaches say, the first thing they say usually. They also like how I can use my hands and how I can trick the linemen to go to the outside when I make a jab step and come back to the inside.”
Weathersby got the chance to check around USC some while he was in for camp, and he’s done some reading up on the program Shane Beamer is putting together.
“They are definitely up and coming,” Weathersby said. “I definitely like the direction they are headed right now. And they have a couple of their linemen leaving. I’ve been studying it a little bit. I will definitely take one (official visit) there, but I just don’t know when.”
Weathersby said along with USC he’s getting strong attention from Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and Mississippi State, who have all offered. He’s also getting Alabama interest after camping there Saturday and is looking for an offer from them as well.
His only scheduled official visit is to Tennessee later this week. He plans to take his other official visits during the season and said USC will get one. He plans to make his decision about three to four games into his season.
