First year USC football coach Shane Beamer hopes to duplicate many of the positive things his former boss with the Gamecocks, Steve Spurrier, accomplished during his tenure. One event Beamer has brought back into vogue with the Gamecocks is the annual media golf tournament leading up to the start of pre-season camp.
Beamer hosted his first Birdies with Beamer event Thursday at the Woodcreek Golf Club in Elgin. Unlike Spurrier, Beamer did not play in the captain’s choice tournament choosing to ride a golf court around the course to greet each group. For the record, 58 was the winning score and former Gamecock great Sterling Sharpe had the longest drive.
After golf and lunch, Beamer held a 30-minute question and answer session with the media to preview the start of practice a week from Friday at 9:40 AM. Most of his assistants were also on hand to visit with media members.
