STRecruiting: South Carolina strikes again at Hough High with a commitment from safety Davion Jones

After landing a commitment from CB Josh Dobson of Hough High in Cornelius, NC on Wednesday, South Carolina secondary coach Torrian Gray went back into that talent-laden program for a top-notch safety in Davion Jones (6-0 175). Jones announced his commitment to the Gamecocks on Thursday night, opting for them over LSU, Georgia and Auburn. Indiana had also been involved.

Much like with Dobson, Gray had a long-standing relationship with Jones that carried the Gamecocks across the finish line. Jones had attended Shane Beamer Summer Camps for several years and has regularly attended games and recruiting events in Columbia. He made his USC official visit his last one the weekend of June 19th. He also visited in March for a spring practice.

That comfort level with the Gamecocks was key in his decision.

“Me and coach Gray have had a connection since my eighth-grade year, going into the summer,” Jones said when making his announcement on the 247Sports YouTube channel. “So ever since then, it’s been a tight-knit relationship between me and coach Gray.

“They kind of treat me like I am already there,” Jones said in June.   “I have a good relationship with some of the players, so I’m kind of like the little brother.  I’m definitely welcomed like family there.”

Gray is rebuilding his secondary brick by brick with the 2027 class, and Jones saw an opportunity with the Gamecocks to help continue their tradition of excellence in the defensive backfield.

“They call it DBU,” Jones said.  “Coach Beamer, the way he’s run his program has been great.  They send a lot of guys to the league at my position.  Coach Gray, outstanding guy.  I love that guy.  They need guys.  They need guys from the ’27 class.  They need two corners and a nickel, basically what I play. That’s really been the biggest selling point.”

Jones is coming off a season of 50 tackles with four interceptions and four pass deflections.

Jones is the Gamecocks’ 15th commitment for their 2027 class, and they have two more targets with pending announcements. OL Nate Carson is set for 6:00 PM on Friday, and DE Jayden Broadie will announce at 6:00 PM on Saturday.
