South Carolina landed a big recruiting fish on Wednesday night with a public commitment from CB Josh Dobson (6-1,180) of Cornelius, NC. Dobson, who now attends Hough High School, previously played for Catawba Ridge in Fort Mill, and that’s where his national recruiting profile began to take shape.
Among the analysts, Dobson is regarded as one of the top corners in the nation for his class. His offers spread from coast-to-coast, but he narrowed his choices to the Gamecocks, Michigan, Texas A&M, Auburn, and LSU. He took officials to all except LSU.
Texas A&M was identified by the analysts as the favorite for most of Dobson’s recruitment, but South Carolina reportedly decided not to be outspent. According to Pete Naskos of On3, the Gamecocks’ financial commitment to Dobson is in the neighborhood of $1.5 million dollars.
Money alone, however, didn’t win the day for the Gamecocks. Dobson has been around the Gamecocks a lot, and he’s been exposed to secondary coach Torrian Gray a lot. Having the chance to be coached by Gray, Clayton White, and Shane Beamer was big for Dobson.
“The relationships I had with them since the eighth grade, the development as far as T-Gray and Clayton White,” Dobson said after making his announcement on the Rivals YouTube channel. “Beamer is a player’s coach, and I know he’s going to do big things this season, and the team is going to go real far.”
Asked what he will bring to the team, Dobson responded, “They’re getting a hard worker. I’m not going to leave the lab. I’m going to work every day. They are going to get everything out of me.
“I have all the tools that they want to coach up and make better,” Dobson said during his recruitment. “The length. The speed. The way I play the game. The way I’m already more advanced than some of the corners in my class. They feel like if they can get their hands on me, I can become a great player.”
Dobson has watched the Gamecocks closely, and even through the struggles of a 4-8 season in 2025, he saw a first-rate defense under Gray and White.
“That defense has been great the past couple of years,” he said. “I really look at their cornerback room and the cornerbacks they’ve developed, and there are 16 on the next level. I think I’d fit really well. I like what they do with their defense. And they have some dogs on the D-line usually.”
Dobson is the 14th commitment for the Gamecocks’ 2027 class and the second at corner.
