STRecruiting: South Carolina grabs another in-state talent with commitment from TE Caden Ramsey of Cross

South Carolina football coach /Shane Beamer landed another top prospect from within the borders of South Carolina Monday afternoon when TE Caden Ramsey of Cross announced his commitment to the Gamecocks over Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech and Syracuse were also in the mix in the final weeks.

Ramsey picked up his offer from the Gamecocks in June after tight ends coach Shawn Elliott put him through an extensive workout during a camp session.

“Elliott definitely likes him as a hybrid, one of those tight ends that doesn’t necessarily put his hands in the ground, but they can flank him out,” Cross coach Shaun Wright said.  “They want mismatches against linebackers and safeties.  I had a conversation with Coach Beamer, and he didn’t know he led the state in interceptions last year.  He’s pretty sure his defensive back coach would want to try him as well.  South Carolina’s obviously going to give him a chance to find a spot somewhere on that field.”

Wright added that the Gamecocks are getting a player who will push himself to the limit to help his team win. He’s also a standout in basketball and is considered one of the state’s top players in that sport as well.

.”He’s a very, very competitive kid,” Wright said.  “His will to win, he just doesn’t like to lose. He’s now understanding how to practice at the level at which we want him to practice.   You’re talking about 6-5, 215 pounds, can play inside and outside. Getting mismatches is what we try to do to him.  Oftentimes, because of his height and demeanor, he just makes those routine plays, the plays that you think he would struggle with. With his physical attributes along with his attitude, you get a type of player that someone that Shawn Elliott loves.”

Last season as a receiver, Ramsey had 46 catches for 749 yards and nine touchdowns. As a free safety, he led the state with 14 interceptions. He is also a standout on the basketball team, having averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game last season.

Ramsey was in Columbia Saturday night for their game with SC State, and he will take his official visit for this weekend’s game against Vanderbilt.

Ramsey gives the Gamecocks two tight ends for the 2026 class, joining Jamel Howse of Newberry. He is the 16th commitment for the class and the seventh from South Carolina.
