The South Carolina Gamecocks are on a heater, having disposed of its last three opponents via the 10-run rule, including a 13-3 victory (8 innings) over Queens University at Founders Park, Wednesday.
USC jumped on Queens early with a three-run homer from Cole Messina in the bottom half of the first inning. The Gamecocks put five more on the board in the fourth thanks, in part, to three consecutive errors from the Royals. Queens fought back with a long ball off the bat of JJ Sousa in the fifth. Ethan Petry went deep in the home half, his third of the year, to stretch South Carolina’s lead back out to 10-1.
The Gamecocks went scoreless over the next two frames before sending everyone home early with a three-run eighth. The first two runs were plated on bases-loaded walks to Evan Stone and Ryan Bakes. USC scored the clincher when Will Tippett was struck by a pitch, forcing home Carson Hornung with the Gamecocks’ 13th run.
Junior lefthander Matthew Becker (1-0) threw two scoreless innings and picked up the win in his first start since recovering from a muscle strain. Seven Gamecocks pitchers combined to strike out 17 against just a pair of walks.
South Carolina (5-0) will play host to Belmont for a three-game set this weekend. Friday’s first pitch from Founders Park is scheduled for 4 p.m.
