South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley Monday was named the National Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Staley is the first coach to win the award three straight seasons. This is the fourth time in five seasons she has been honored by the organization.
The Gamecocks are the #1 seed for the NCAA Tournament for a third straight season. They will host the first two rounds of the tournament and will play either Presbyterian or Sacred Heart on Friday at 2:00 PM.
The Gamecocks remain firmly atop the AP Women’s Basketball Top 25 this week. USC received all 35 first place votes. Iowa is ranked second and is followed by Southern Cal, Texas and Stanford.
The USC men dropped one spot to 16th in the AP Men’s Top 25 this week. The Gamecocks were voted as high as ninth, and five voters left them out of the top 25 entirely. This marks the seventh straight week for the Gamecocks in the top 25.
