Following a day off on Monday, the USC football team returned to practice on Tuesday morning. It was the fourth workout of camp for the Gamecocks, who will hold their first scrimmage on Saturday. Early Tuesday afternoon, Gamecock coach Shane Beamer met with the media to provide an update on camp and take questions.

Key comments from Beamer:

  • Been very pleased with the progress of the freshmen; they have come in and picked things up quickly.
  • A lot of players have changed their bodies since the spring- leaner, stronger; the strength and conditioning staff did a great job.
  • Freshman OL Neff Giwa, who is playing his first season of football, shows a lot of promise and is still learning the basics of the game; he could help somewhere, if not on the offensive line.
  • Likes where they are with the offense at this point; they’ve put in a lot of work with Briles since he arrived in January. Will see more in the scrimmage on Saturday.
  • Stewart and Peak are at practice, right on track and progressing, able to do things within the plan set up by the doctors.
  • Mazeo Bennett caught a touchdown pass from Cutter Woods on the final play of today’s practice.
  • The entire team has a lot of confidence in Cutter Woods and continues to do nice things in practice. He works very hard on the mental side of things.
