Shane Beamer will open his sixth preseason football camp at South Carolina on Friday morning. The Gamecocks are coming off a 4-8 campaign, and Beamer attempted to retool his program in the offseason with new coaches and new players from the free agent portal.
There is a lot of excitement inside and outside of the program going into the 2026 season, though nationally, the Gamecocks are still viewed as a long shot to make the College Football Playoff. They were voted 11th in the SEC Media Preseason Poll last month.
But Beamer said on Thursday he likes the way this team looks on the inside. He said he has seen excellent leadership during the offseason workouts, and he feels they have much better depth across the board. And he has a quarterback in LaNorris Sellers, who, if he takes well to the new offense under Kendall Briles, has all the ability to do big things this season. And he has some weapons around him as well.
Some of Beamer’s key comments on Thursday
- No new news on Peak and Stewart other than they are making progress and will be with them in the morning, but not practicing full speed; the only new end-of-season injury this summer was to WR Jackson Repp.
- At this point, he doesn’t expect to add any newly eligible fifth-year player to his roster.
- Sees a great conviction from his players that has led him to believe they are better than they were at the end of last season; they are better because of what they went through, and there’s a high expectation level.
- Sellers doesn’t believe he’s a 4-8 QB, and he doesn’t believe Sellers is a 4-8 QB, and he’s taken accountability, but they’ve got to be better around him.
- Clayton White is one of the premier defensive coordinators in the country who doesn’t get enough credit; sixth year with this defensive system and a lot of similarities to the 2024 defense.
