Mike Shula brings extensive NFL and college experience to new role as #Gamecocks offensive coordinator (AUDIO)

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer officially introduced Mike Shula as the Gamecocks’ new offensive coordinator, Tuesday. Shula, who served as the team’s senior offensive assistant in 2024, steps into the role with an impressive coaching résumé spanning both college and the NFL.

Shula’s deep football background includes stints as an offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, and New York Giants, among others. He’s also held various coaching roles with the Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos, and Buffalo Bills, while serving as the head coach at Alabama from 2003 to 2006. As a player, Shula was a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a standout college career at Alabama, where he earned First-Team All-SEC honors in 1985.

Beamer praised Shula’s qualifications and leadership in announcing the hire. “Bringing Mike Shula here was a home run,” Beamer said. “Since he’s been with us, he’s been outstanding. There was never any doubt about who I was going to choose — Mike was the guy.”

For Shula, the opportunity to transition from senior offensive assistant to offensive coordinator is an exciting challenge. He expressed his enthusiasm for the role, citing his appreciation for the support of former offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, who played a key role in bringing Shula to South Carolina last year. “He seems incredibly excited to step into this role and expressed his gratitude to Dowell Loggains for bringing him to USC,” Beamer said.

One of Shula’s key priorities moving forward will be working with quarterback LaNorris Sellers, whose development is critical to the team’s future success. Shula highlighted the importance of their relationship, saying it’s a strong foundation that will benefit both Sellers and the program as a whole. “Building a connection with LaNorris Sellers provides a solid start in this position,” Shula said. “I’m optimistic it will help Sellers grow and contribute to the team’s success.”

While Shula enters his new role with insights from his time as a senior assistant last season, he acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead. “The profession is hard,” Shula noted, reflecting on his time as head coach at Alabama. “It was a tough experience, but it’s part of the job.”

Looking ahead, Shula is focused on ensuring the Gamecocks’ offense maintains its success, “We want to make sure we put together a plan to do things as well as we did this year.” However, he recognizes that getting the players comfortable with the offense quickly will be one of his biggest challenges.

Despite the challenges, Shula remains passionate about the game and his role, “I still love being around quarterbacks, being around the game.”

Shula will debut as the USC offensive coordinator when the Gamecocks square off with Illinois in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl kicking off from Orlando, Fla., Dec. 31st at 3 p.m.
