South Carolina’s season opening winning streak was ended at six Saturday aftternoon at Founders Park with a 11-2 loss to Belmont. The series is tied at a game each and game three will be Sunday afternoon. The loss was the first ever by the Gamecocks to a team from the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Bruins scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth and led 5-2 going to the eighth inning. A pair of two run homers, one in the eighth and one in the ninth, put the game away for Belmont. Chris Veach gave up the first one and Austin Williamson the second.
The Gamecocks committed four errors and allowed three unearned runs. Starter Dylan Eskew patched the first five innings and took the loss to fall to 1-1. He allowed five runs, four of them earned, on three hits while striking out three. He did not walk a batter, but he hit three.
The Gamecocks had plenty of baserunners all day. They had nine hits along with two walks, two batters hit by pitches and two reach base via errors. But the big hit eluded them as they stranded 13 baserunners. USC had at least one baserunner in every inning except one, and they left a combined six on base over the last three innings.
The Gamecocks scoring came from an RBI double in the fourth by Gavin Casas and an RBI triple by Dylan Brewer in the sixth.
