USC head baseball coach Mark Kingston pushed all the right buttons during the first forty games of last season. The Gamecocks raced out to a 34-6 start, which included a series win over arch-rival Clemson, a split with top-ranked LSU, and a sweep of 3rd-ranked Florida in Columbia. At 13-4 in the SEC, Carolina appeared to be a lock for a top-eight national seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Then, Kingston’s machine started to leak oil as his squad was crippled by injuries. With new faces on the infield and new arms on the mound, the Gamecocks couldn’t maintain their white-hot start. After the sweep of the Gators, USC lost its final four conference series before going one and two at the SEC tournament.
The Gamecocks turned their fortunes around in the NCAA tournament, sweeping through the Columbia regional before falling in the Supers to that same Florida team that USC swept in April.
On Tuesday, Kingston joined SportsTalk to look back on 2023, reflect on things he and his team learned during last season, and preview this year’s campaign, which begins Friday at home against Miami of Ohio.
