One key element was missing from the South Carolina defensive last season…a pass rush. The Gamecocks had only 21 sacks. That ranked tied for 121st out of 130 FBS programs. Defensive ends coach Sterling Lucas is keenly aware that has to change in 2024 for the defense to have a chance.
In the offseason, the Gamecocks hit the transfer portal seeking to improve their pass rush off the edge, and they signed Kyle Kennard from Georgia Tech and Gilbur Edmond from Florida State, who started his career at USC. They also added highly regarded freshman Dylan Stewart.
Adding these guys to the mix along with returnees like Elijah Davis, Bryan Thomas, Desmond Umeozulu and Jatius Geer has given Lucas hope of better things to come from his position. He met with the media last week to update where his group stands.
