Gamecocks offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and defensive coordinator Clayton White both addressed the media, Wednesday, to share the latest from South Carolina’s spring practice.
Loggains addressed a number of topics, including former Alabama head coach Mike Shula joining the staff as an analyst, breaking in the running backs and receivers that are new to the program and how the quarterback depth chart is shaping up.
There is no timetable to naming a starter, but when it comes to evaluating the position, Loggains said it all comes down to scoring production, “The message to those guys is the guy who gets the team in the end zone the most will have the greatest chance to be the guy. That’s what we’re going to judge it on.”
Five players are taking reps at quarterback: LaNorris Sellers, Luke Doty, Robby Ashford, Davis Beville and Dante Reno. Sellers took the first snaps with the starting unit, but Loggains stressed that the position battle has not been settled and the evaluation is ongoing.
White shared his excitement about the different looks he’ll be able to employ due to the Gamecocks’ depth and versatility on the defensive side of the ball.
“Our personnel fits where we can be a flex nickel defense. That means playing two (different) fronts and nickel personnel will be the base. And I think our guys understand our system well enough to where they both blend,” White said. “Our guys, they light up when we talk like that. They light up when they know we have options and different things we can do on the field.”
The best position battle on defense may be at the cornerback spot opposite entrenched starter O’Donnell Fortune. With the departure of Marcellus Dial, sophomores Judge Collier and Emory Floyd are in the mix with redshirt freshman Vicari Swain.
