Longtime South Carolina assistant baseball coach Jim Toman has died from complications related to brain cancer, it was reported Tuesday afternoon by Diamond Prospects. Toman was 64 and was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the spring of 2025.
Toman joined Ray Tanner at South Carolina when Tanner was hired away from NC State in June of 1996. Toman played at State and was a team captain in 1983 and 1984.
He spent 11 seasons with the Gamecocks, helping them reach three College World Series.
Toman was named the head coach at Liberty prior to the 2008 season, and he coached the Flames for nine seasons. He took them to the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and 2014.
After a two-year stint as the assistant head coach at The College of Charleston, Toman was named the head coach at Middle Tennessee State in 2019 and spent four seasons with the Blue Raiders. He resigned in August of 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Murfreesboro.
Toman won 406 games in his coaching career and was the 2014 Big South Coach of the Year.
