Perhaps the worst-kept secret in South Carolina was revealed on Monday night: LaNorris Sellers will be USC’s starting quarterback heading into fall camp. Speaking at a Gamecock club function in Florence, head coach Shane Beamer announced that the former South Florence Bruin would be QB 1 entering preseason practice. Beamer did stress, though, that Sellers will have to fend off backup quarterback Robby Ashford to be the starter when the Gamecocks kick off the new season against Old Dominion on August 31st.

Last year, Sellers appeared in three games for the Gamecocks, throwing and completing four passes versus Furman, two of which went for touchdowns. He also rushed the ball five times during the season for 51 yards and another touchdown.

In USC’s spring game, Sellers completed 9-of-11 passes for 70 yards and rushed for 38 yards with a touchdown, leading the Garnet squad to a victory.

During his senior year at South Florence, Sellers threw for 2,948 yards with 45 touchdowns and only two interceptions while rushing for 1,338 yards and 17 touchdowns, leading the Bruins to a 4A state championship. He was a finalist for the state’s Mr. Football while earning offensive MVP honors in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas after leading the Sandlappers to the win by completing 9-of-13 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown.
