SBCMD2024: Don’t call it the two-minute warning and other new truths of college football from John McDaid (AUDIO)

College football’s instant replay system is quite a bit more complex than most fans might think

John McDaid is a busy man these days. The coordinator of football officials for the Southeastern Conference also holds that same title for the Sun Belt. And his mission prior to the start of this football season is to explain the challenges facing college officials. Especially with several new changes coming to the game.

A week after visiting with the media in Dallas as part of SEC Media Days, McDaid was in New Orleans to give a powerful presentation to the media and coaches of the Sun Belt Conference. And he started by clarifying a bit of terminology.

“We also have introduced a two-minute timeout, not a two-minute warning,” McDaid said regarding the similar rule in the NFL. “It was intentional; I don’t know necessarily why, but we’re calling it a two-minute timeout. The mechanics of it are very identical to what you see on Sundays.”

The stoppage in play will not only assist in game planning in the final moments of the second and fourth quarters, but personnel changes will be easier, too. No additional timeouts are being given to teams, but a pair of two-minute breaks should help coaching staffs and players with execution.

McDaid also explained the ins and outs of instant replay, along with discussing the new helmet communication and sideline tablet use, which teams will be able to utilize starting this season.
