Sunday 9^th February 2025 marks the day football history could be made. Three Super Bowl titles in a row have never been won by any team in the whole history of the sport. Even teams that dominated different eras of the sport like the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Francisco 49ers could not manage a hat-trick of Super Bowl wins. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs stand on the brink of history.

Although the Chiefs are on for the “three-peat” once the Super Bowl rolls into the Caesars Superdome, New Orleans on 9^th February, it has not been an easy campaign for Andy Reid’s charges. The Conference Championships win over the Buffalo Bills was the 13^th time this campaign that the Chiefs have won by a single digit margin, and incredibly, the win over the Las Vegas Raiders back in November 2024 was the 14^th match in a row that Mahomes and co. had won by one score. It has been a remarkable display of grit and character that has propelled the Chiefs to the brink of eternal glory.

Success built on a solid defense

After the regular season, the Chiefs went into the playoffs on the back of a solid 15-2 record, only suffering losses to the Bills (21-30) and the Denver Broncos (0-38) in a dead rubber in which Mahomes was rested. But while 2022 MVP Mahomes has endured his worst season on record statistically, the Chief’s defense has kept them in the hunt for a third Super Bowl success in a row.

Only the Los Angeles Chargers (301), the Denver Broncos (311), and the Philadelphia Eagles (303), the team attempting to sabotage the “three-peat,” conceded less points in the regular season than the Chiefs, but their defense against the rush will be tested to the maximum when George Karlaftis, Tershawn Watson, Chris Jones, and the rest of the defensive line come up against Saquon Barkley.

Eagles’ hopes pinned on Barkley?

One man that could put a stop to the Chiefs juggernaut is MVP-contender Saquon Barkley. The Eagles’ running back has lit up the NFL this season and finished as the only player to rush over 2000 yards. The 2005 yards rushed is also by a career high for Barkley, and by a long way too and it is the Penn State graduate that most Eagles fans looking at odds on American betting sites at the Daily Star will be pinning their hopes on.

The Eagles go into the 2023 Super Bowl rematch as underdogs, but after crushing the Washington Commanders (55-23) in their Conference Championship match, Barkley and the rest of the Eagles will be in buoyant mood as they try to prevent the Chiefs from making history and seal their first Super Bowl title since 2018, when they defeated the Patriots 41-33.

Eagles’ offense ready to fire

With Barkley posing the most obvious threat, the Chiefs will also have to be wary of the offensive variety possessed by the Eagles. It is rare that a running back in the form of Barkley comes into the MVP conversation full stop, but quarterback Jalen Hurts himself has enjoyed a stellar season so far. The QB has rushed for four touchdowns in the postseason alone, clocking up 122 yards in the process and could offer another route to the endzone if Barkley’s running lanes are shut down.

Elsewhere in the team, tight end Dalles Goedert, along with wide receivers DeVonta Smith and A. J. Brown have been sought out most by Hurts and these players will also need to step up in the biggest match of their careers. It promises to be an explosive occasion with one of the best offenses going up against one of the best defenses. But do not be fooled, the Chiefs have some weapons of their own in the form of Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce, and Xavier Worthy.
