Clemson suffered its first loss of the season in bruising fashion, Sunday, falling to Ole Miss 15-5 (7 innings) at the Shriners Children’s College Showdown in Arlington, Tex. After posting victories in the first two games of the tournament without head coach Erik Bakich, the Tigers’ pitching let them down in Game 3, walking seven and surrendering four homers as part of the onslaught.
Bakich served the last of his three-game suspension, Saturday, and returned to the dugout against Ole Miss.
The Rebels jumped all over Clemson starter Justin LeGuernic (0-1), touching up the southpaw for seven runs in the first two innings. Ole Miss scored nine of its first 11 runs on homers. The eighth-ranked Tigers tried to claw back, plating two runs in third, two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth before Ole Miss forced the 10-run rule with a four-run seventh.
Josh Paino (2-3, RBI) finished the tournament 4 for 9 with five RBI. Dominic Listi (1-2, 2 RBI) is also off to a hot start, going 5 for 9 with seven RBI over the first three games.
Clemson (2-1) will host Presbyterian in its home opener at 4 p.m., Wednesday.
