Chance Miller claims he doesn’t have hobbies; his free time is spent on sports. And it’s that mindset that made him the perfect candidate to replace Matt Hogue as the new athletics director at Coastal Carolina University.
Miller was formerly introduced at a press conference on campus Tuesday morning, and it’s obvious he’s ready to get to work and connect with “Teal Nation.”
“I love the fan engagement,” Miller told the media. “You cannot control what 18- to 22-year-olds do on the court, the field, or the pitch. Once they get out there, it is what it is at that point. But what we can control in the athletics department is the time a fan comes to a game to the time they leave. It’s looking at all of those touch points and making them better.”
The former Senior Deputy Athletics Director at USC says that he gets a lot of his ideas and inspiration from the folks at Disney.
“I love how they interact and treat people when they walk into the door,” Miller gushed. “I’ve taken a lot of that stuff. I’ve stolen it from old Walt Disney and tried to implement that at South Carolina, and I think we can implement a lot of that here.”
CCU President Dr. Michael Benson also shared some interesting news during the press conference by detailing a grand strategic plan for athletic facilities. In addition to the current indoor football practice facility that is currently under construction, Benson noted that the university is planning to build a new 8,000-seat convocation center on the corner of Highway 501 and University Boulevard. The center will be home to CCU men’s and women’s basketball, as well as volleyball, and will also welcome high school events and graduation ceremonies. The construction project, slated to begin in 2026, will be funded with the help of penny sales tax funds, according to Benson.
