As a big 2028 tight end (6-6 240) at Powdersville, Riggs Savage has grown accustomed to running into, around, and over people on a football field. Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium, Savage put his size to good use as he muscled his way through the crowd and onto the field with thousands of others who rushed the Gamecock players following their win over Tennessee.
“It was my first ever field rush that I’ve been a part of, and it was electric,” Savage said. “It was unreal. I probably made it to the 40. I was kind of on the outskirts with some of the players, but the majority of the players were kind of in the middle at the 50. I was kind of on the outskirts around the 40.”
The field rush was only part of the positive experience for Savage Saturday night. It was his second game visit of the season to USC, and he walked away impressed with what he saw.
“Overall, as a team, just how South Carolina fights,” Riggs said. “Obviously, the environment was electric. The tight ends played a great game, a lot of huge key blocks, and they even threw some tight end screens too. So they’re really utilizing their tight ends in their offense.”
USC tight ends coach Shawn Elliott is putting in the recruiting work with Savage, and the two got the chance to talk once again.
“Coach Elliott is just a great dude, and he’s super, super hype,” Savage said. “Just a great dude, and his energy is just unmatched. He’s looking to keep building the relationship, let both of our seasons finish up, and then see where we go from there.”
And where is Savage headed with his decision-making process?
“I haven’t really narrowed it down yet, but I think that I’m going to get it narrowed down come maybe December, January,” he said. “I think I’ll get it narrowed down to a couple of schools then.”
Along with USC, Savage listed Louisville, Northwestern, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, and Cincinnati as the schools coming at him with the most interest. He has also been to games at Virginia, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, Wake Forest, and Clemson. The Tigers, however, just recently took a commitment from a 2028 tight end, so Savage has moved on from the major program closest to his home.
Savage will visit Louisville this weekend, Appalachian State on November 7th, and Georgia Tech on November 21st. He’s also looking at a visit to Northwestern. At this point, there is no number one team on his mind.
“N”ot as of right now,” Savage said. “I think we’re just kind of waiting on my season to finish up, waiting on the college season to finish up, and then we’ll kind of go from there based off what they’re saying.”
Savage’s twin brother Phillip is also a prospect as a linebacker. He has taken in games this season at USC, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State, and East Tennessee State.
