STRecruiting: South Carolina this week expanded its defensive end board with offers to a pair of North Carolinians

Jayden Broadie

Of South Carolina’s 11 commitments at this point, ten are on the offensive side. The only defensive commitment is tackle John Archer. In an effort to deepen the pool of candidates at defensive end, position coach Deion Barnes this week offered Josiah Sturdivant of Wake Forest, NC, and Jayden Broadie of Rolesville, NC.

Sturdivant has been committed to Rutgers, and he’s sticking to that pledge for now. Broadie is unattached. Both were offered after participating in USC camps this month. For Broadie, it was his first time on the USC campus.

“South Carolina is new to my recruiting,” Broadie said. “Coach Barnes didn’t really know anything about me at first. I got brought up a little late, but I had a few conversations with Coach Barnes before. I came up for the camp last Friday. We had conversations about his interest towards me and that he was very interested, but he would like to see me in person. So, I decided to go there for a camp. I performed, showed out, and showcased my talents. And then he was very interested in me. They had a little meeting about me to talk over and stuff, and then that’s when they decided to offer me.”

While on campus for the first time, Broadie made sure to take in as much as he could to help get a feel for a place he might call home one day.

“I loved everything,” Broadie said. “I loved the environment. I loved the atmosphere there. And after the camp, I got a little mini tour of the indoor facilities. Everything was beautiful. I knew a few players down there at the camp, and I knew a few players on the team. I pretty much got an understanding of everything, and it’s really like a family down there. I really enjoyed myself down there.”

Broadie is starting to see his recruiting tick up with the offer from the Gamecocks. He also has offers from North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, East Carolina, Tennessee, NC State, Wake Forest, Georgia, and James Madison. He has not taken any official visits. However, he plans to schedule OVs with USC and Virginia Tech this fall. He has visited Blacksburg unofficially, and he was there for a camp last weekend.

“Over the past few weeks, my recruiting has changed,” Broadie said. “I originally had a top six (Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn, Missouri) and was planning on committing on July 4th. But a lot of stuff has changed, so I’m going to carry on my evaluation into the season and wait on committing. I plan on setting up an official visit with South Carolina sometime during the season, most likely during my bye week, which is the third week. I don’t plan on committing during the summer. I’m going to take it into the season to make my decision.”

Broadie added that USC and Virginia Tech are standing out the most with him at this point.

“Favoring South Carolina right now,” he said. “I really enjoy Coach Barnes, his energy and everything he brings,”

Last season, Broadie totaled 98 tackles with 20 tackles for loss and six sacks.
