For the second consecutive home game, South Carolina had Byrnes CB Aidyn Wiggins in for a visit last Saturday. The fact that Wiggins, who has been committed to Auburn since the summer, continues to accept the invites from the Gamecocks has to give head coach Shane Beamer and secondary coach Torrian Gray hope that they can get him turned their way before the December signing day.
“The visit went well. I mean, every time I go out there, it’s a lot of hospitality showing from the staff all the way to Coach Beamer to people on the recruitment service,” Wiggins said. “I see how they feel about me and just the environment they have with their players. All the players I’ve talked to, they’re cool. They seem to talk very highly of Coach (Clayton) White, Coach Beamer, and Coach Gray.”
Gray has had his hands full this season with a secondary that has not performed to standards. Maybe the talent level has dropped off some, and he believes Wiggins is the kind of guy to boost his room.
“He loves how I’m very competitive, and I’m fast,” Wiggins said. “I look fast on film and make plays on film, and I continue to do that week in and week out, and how that can translate into college football. I feel like I can fit in well, especially with me running track. Most of the SEC receivers either run track or do some type of speed work, so just knowing that I can match up with him and run step by step with him. Me being a big corner, that could also be an advantage, especially knowing that I can use my size and make plays on the ball.”
So after another Saturday at Williams-Brice, how does Wiggins now view the Gamecocks in relation to Auburn and his recruiting:
“They are still in the running. They are still reaching out and doing whatever they can to flip me,” Wiggins said. “But right now my commitment is still with Auburn. They are still my people, but for South Carolina, it kind of moves them up just seeing how their fans pack it out no matter what, and what Coach Gray is teaching their DBs also. I’m just weighing out everything and seeing how everything goes, and talking with my family and having a thought with myself about where I could go with things.”
Wiggins said he plans to return to USC for another game later in the season. He also plans to take in a game at Auburn.
Another SEC commitment from Byrnes joined Wiggins on the visit to USC. RB Tre Segarra had South Carolina among his finalists before choosing LSU last summer.
“I would say he was enjoying the game with how he was reacting and how we were talking throughout the game and our reactions on it.”
Like with Wiggins, the Gamecocks continue to recruit Segarra, hoping to add him to the class in December.
