STRecruiting: South Carolina and Georgia among the schools keeping a watchful eye on big OT Ty Johnson of Charleston

Lucy Beckham is a relatively new high school in Charleston having opened its doors in 2020, so the football program hasn’t had a lot of time for player development. But one player who is coming along within the program is junior OT Ty Johnson (6-6 300).

Johnson has offers from Virginia Tech and UAB. However, South Carolina and Georgia are very much aware of him and are evaluating him for an offer. He attended summer camp at both places and has been to both for games.

South Carolina offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley liked Johnson in camp and and has kept in touch. Johnson was able to see Teasley again in Person a few weeks ago when he attended the Gamecocks’ home game against Vanderbilt.

“The biggest thing he likes is my size and the potential with how I’m playing,” Johnson said. “He really likes what he sees, he just wants to see me play a little bit more.  I only have one season of varsity film from last year, so he wants to see a little bit more film.  Overall, it seems like he likes me.

“They like my size.  Also, I can snap, so I can play center, so a little more valuable in that aspect. They my effort and how I come off the ball, athleticism.” 

The Georgia people have also been in touch.

“Very similar things to South Carolina,” Johnson said.  “Love what they see.  Want to see a little more of it on film  Once they see that, they’ll go from there.”

Johnson actually is a Georgia legacy. His dad, Travis Johnson, played on the offensive line for the Bulldogs in the mid-90s, so he’s no stranger to Athens or the Georgia program.

Johnson plans to visit North Carolina this Saturday for the Clemson game. He also is down for visiting Virginia Tech on November 1st.

Johnson attended the Clemson spring game last April but said there hasn’t been much follow up from the Tigers. USC and Georgia are clearly showing the most interest at this point.
