STRecruiting Notebook 7-27: Clemson QB target to announce this week; A top 2028 football prospect is leaving the state; A 2028 OL target sets visit to USC; South Carolina loses a 4th portal signee to MLB; Clemson in top six with two national basketball prospects

Clemson may be on the verge of landing its 2028 quarterback. Trace Hawkins is set to announce his commitment on Thursday, according to Chad Simmons of Rivals. He also has Duke, LSU, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech on his short list. In fact, Paul Strelow of TigerIllustrated projected Hawkins to Clemson, usually an indication the Tigers have gotten the call.

South Carolina target 2028 DE Nasir Walker is leaving AC Flora and moving to Irvin, CA to attend Crean Lutheran High School. Along with an offer from the Gamecocks, Walker has also picked up offers from Cal, Florida State, NC State, Louisville, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and others.

2028 OL Ty Winn of Philadelphia plans to visit South Carolina again for the Georgia game in November.

South Carolina target 2028 LB Tysir Young of Middletown, DE committed to Alabama.

South Carolina target 2028 QB Carter Zingelmann of Coppell, TX was offered by Missouri.

Per Jason Priester of The Clemson Insider, 2028 TE Wright Martin of Nashville will visit Clemson for the home opener against Georgia Southern, and might return for the Miami game on October 3rd.

In a 247Sports story by Zac Blostein, the writer opined that Clemson and USC target DE Asher Ghioto of Jacksonville appears to favor Miami and Florida at this point in his recruitment. However, Ghioto’s father told Steve Wiltfong of On3 that they will visit USC for the Tennessee game, and they are working on a date for a Clemson game visit. Ghioto visited Clemson and USC in June.

2030 WR Moses Irwin of Meridian, ID was offered by South Carolina. He was also recently offered by former Gamecock personnel director Taylor Edwards, who is now at Florida State.

South Carolina lost free agent commitment RHP Ethan Sutton to the Dodgers, who drafted him in the 16th round and went over slot to sign him with a $175,00 bonus. He’s the fourth portal signee by USC, all pitchers, to sign with an MLB club. The others are Tyler Pitzer, Miguel Hugas, and Will Whelan. Those subtractions leave the Gamecocks with 34 players on the roster.

6-4 Justin Wise of Bogart, GA has Clemson in his top six with Texas, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Georgia and Miami.

Clemson is in the final six with 6-2 Josh Tyson of West Chester, OH. The others are Xavier, Ohio State, Michigan State, Cincinnati and Virginia Tech.

6-8 Nolan Nelson of Charlotte has Furman in his final five with Florida, Southern Cal, USF and Harvard.
