STRecruiting Notebook 7-13:  Clemson a finalist with safety target; One-time Clemson and USC targets picked other programs over the weekend; Two Clemson recruits, four USC free agents taken in the baseball draft; A top USC signee apparently coming to school

SAF Giovanni Tuggle has Clemson in his current final five.  The others are Alabama,  Ole Miss, Florida State, and Tennessee.

OL Mike Westerfield of Roswell, GA, who was offered by USC and visited unofficially in April, committed Friday to Georgia. 

One-time South Carolina target SAF Kennedy Green of Douglasville, GA, re-committed to Mississippi State.

One-time South Carolina target LB Mikahi Allen of Ramsey, NJ, committed to Texas A&M.

One-time Clemson target LB Roman Igwebuike of Chicago committed to Notre Dame.

South Carolina and Clemson target OL Brendan Hall of Charlotte was offered by Georgia Tech.

Gray Collegiate OL Jack Armstrong (6-2 270) committed to The Citadel. He’s the son of former USC DL Mike Armstrong.

The baseball draft ended Sunday night, and Clemson had two of its signees selected. RHP Blake Bryant was taken with the 31st pick by Arizona. That carries a pick value of $3.12 million. And Ethan Offing was chosen in the 18th round by the Red Sox.

None of South Carolina’s three high school signees were drafted, but four of their free agent signings were. LHP Will Whelan went in the 13th round to Texas. Righthander Miguel Hugas was taken in the 14th round by Baltimore. Righthander Ethan Sutton went in the 16th round to the Dodgers. And shortstop Connor Shouse lasted until the 20th round when the Mariners chose him.

After not being selected in the first nine rounds of the draft, South Carolina signee catcher Alain Gomez-Gudino posted on Instagram what appears to be his intention to enroll in school. That may have killed any remaining interest from teams that might have drafted him, because he was not picked, despite his status as one of the top catching prospects in the high school class.
