STRecruiting: Newly offered offensive lineman Calvin Landy loved his first visit to South Carolina over the weekend

South Carolina offensive line coaches Randy Clements and Jason Smith made an offer to 2028 OL Calvin Landy (6-5, 285) of Alpharetta, GA, on Saturday. The offer came while Landy was in for the Kent State game, his first-ever visit to USC.

“I had a feeling it was coming,” Landy said. “I’ve been in contact with the offensive line coaches for a while: Coach Clements, Coach Smith, and Coach Serbay. We’ve just been texting now and then. And I’ve had a group chat with them. They said they like my film. They just told me to come up for a game. I came with some of my friends and my family. And right before the game, they pulled me into the office with Coach Beamer, and they offered me.”

The fact that Saturday was Landy’s first visit to USC for any type of function…game, camp, or recruiting visit…made the visit all that more interesting to him.

“When I was younger, I always thought that would be the first school that I visited, the first school that I’d get recruited by,” Landy said. “

“The thing that stood out to me was obviously the fan base,” Landy said. “I mean, it was crazy. The game was sold out. There was just a lot of Gamecock fans. We got there like probably an hour or two before the game, and they were already tailgating, and I was just like, dang, their fan base is crazy. Also, what stood out to me is that the left tackle was a true freshman. He was a five-star, whatever, in high school, but just seeing that kids can actually earn their spot on the team showed me something.”

Darius Gray is definitely a special player. Time will tell if Landy develops to that level, but he knows the Gamecock coaches like him.

“They really said I was athletic,” he said. “One of the coaches came up to me when I was in the locker room and knew that I could split jump 36 inches. He said I’ve seen the video, man. That’s really impressive; you’re really athletic. I was like, yes, sir. And they really like how aggressive I am, and they like my film from week one and how well I played.”

The Gamecocks joined several other major programs in offering Landy, and this first visit propelled them into the picture with him.

“All the love they showed me, I mean, I just loved it there. It was a great visit,” Landy said. “They just showed a lot of love. I think Beamer is really about the family aspect of everything. So, I love it. It’s definitely one of my top schools now.”

He added the Gamecocks among Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, and Florida State as some current top schools.

Landy was not able to bring his parents with him this past weekend, so he plans to make another game visit with them at some point. Some other game visits he has planned are “Auburn versus Florida at Auburn. I have Florida versus South Carolina at Florida. And I have Georgia versus Auburn at Georgia.”
