OL Stafford Willis of Arab, AL, will make his commitment announcement Tuesday night at around 8:00 PM Eastern Time. South Carolina has been one of his favorites since his first visit in March. His second visit was in April. And his third was an official at the beginning of May.
But Willis visited Alabama over the weekend, so the obvious conclusion is he will do the thing most top players in his state do and pick the Crimson Tide.
“I know every school got real nervous about that, and I can understand that,” Willis said. “I am from Alabama, but they came in late, so we’ll see where it takes us. But Alabama was a great visit, so we’ll just see. It was good to get to know them a little bit better. I like their coaches and players a lot. It’s going to be a hard decision. I’ll early enroll after this season, and they see me as a guy that’s going to play early. There’s a chance I’ll play year one or definitely on the field by year two. So that’s really exciting to think about.”
Since his visit to USC was his first, and it was nearly two months ago, Gamecock offensive line coaches Randy Clements and Jason Smith have had to keep the fire burning with Willis through various forms of communication. They’ve done just that.
“I talked with Coach Clements and Coach Smooth last Wednesday or Thursday, so recently,” Willis said. “I’m very legit on the Gamecocks. I love South Carolina. I’ve been a priority there for a long time. They think it’s a true fit and that I’m going to play early there. They just love me. They think I’m a really good fit there. So that’s encouraging to hear.”
Willis is also considering Virginia, Virginia Tech, and UCLA, the other official visits he took. He said he will make his decision on Monday and notify all the schools about his plans.
The Gamecocks currently have three offensive linemen committed. Alabama has zero, UCLA four, Virginia Tech four, and Virginia one.
