At his first press conference of the football season, Coastal Carolina head coach Tim Beck was prepared to answer the first question. Reason being? He’s been asked it informally numerous times over the past few weeks.
“Yeah, everybody keeps asking me that,” Beck told the media on Monday when he was asked about his starting quarterback for the season opener. “To be quite honest, it’s an advantage for us, so why would I let Jacksonville State know that? Here’s what I’ll tell people that want to know who the starter is. The game’s at 8 o’clock on CBS SN or it’s in Jacksonville, Alabama,” he said with a wry smile.
The second-year head coach of the Chanticleers did follow-up by saying that he and the staff have made a decision for Thursday night’s clash against Jacksonville State. And the head coach isn’t the only one playing coy about the announcement. Coastal football’s X page has also joined in on the debate.
It most likely will be either returning starter Ethan Vasko or Michigan State transfer Noah Kim. Vasko passed for almost 800 yards with 7 touchdowns in eight games a season ago. He was also CCU’s second-leading rusher with 368 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Kim threw for nearly 1,100 yards and six touchdowns in five games with the Spartans. He was relieved of his starting job after throwing three interceptions in a 26-16 loss at Iowa in late September.
Beck also announced that running back Max Balthazar will miss the season with an injury. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native rushed for 211 yards with two touchdowns a year ago for the Chanticleers.
Coastal kicks off the new season this Thursday night at Jacksonville State. Last season, the Chanticleers won the “Battle of the Barnyard” with the Gamecocks by a final score of 30-16.
