It’s year two for Tim Beck as the head coach at Coastal Carolina, and it’s the first year for the Chanticleers without Grayson McCall at quarterback since he arrived in Conway as a freshman in 2019. McCall passed for over 10,000 yards and 88 touchdowns with the Chants, and he will finish his career this season with NC State.
There was a tight battle at quarterback during camp and Beck has yet to announce his starter for Thursday night’s game at Jacksonville State. Sopomore Ethan Vasko and MIchigan State transfer Noah Kim are the two candidates. Vasko won three of his four starts last season.
One of the top returnees on offense is running back Braydon Bennett who is closing in on 2000 career all-purpose yards. Another is receiver Jameson Tucker who set a program record by averaging over 21 yards per catch last season.
The defense improved by eight points per game last season compared to 2022 and produced three touchdowns. There are 13 new defensive linemen and bandits in the program Shane Bruce returns to lead the linebackers and Matthew McDoom heads up the secondary.
