Auburn, AL: In 2016, the Coastal Carolina baseball team made its first trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, and ultimately won the national championship. To get there, the Chanticleers swept SEC powerhouse LSU in the Super Regionals before defeating Arizona in the championship series. The 2025 installment of Coastal baseball is trying to mimic the run of their 2016 predecessors by going on the road to knock out another SEC foe in the Supers and, perhaps, setting up a showdown with the Wildcats.
On Saturday, the Chanticleers finished off a two-game sweep of the Auburn Super Regional with a 4-1 victory over the Tigers. Jacob Morrison and Hayden Johnson held the high-powered Tigers’ offense to just one run on eight hits while striking out eleven to set up the 1,300-mile return trip from Conway to Omaha. Should Arizona defeat North Carolina on Sunday in game three of the Chapel Hill Super Regional, the Wildcats and Chanticleers would meet in the opening game of the CWS.
“This is no Cinderella,” Coastal head coach Kevin Schnall exclaimed following Saturday’s win. “I want to make sure that’s known. Coastal Carolina, the past century, only eight teams have been to the regionals more times than us. We’re one of the premier, most successful college baseball programs in the entire country.”
Schnall’s team has proven that on the field all season, having won 53 games overall and twenty-three in a row heading into next week’s College World Series.
Game Story Courtesy of Auburn Media Relations: The visiting team in game two, Auburn, scored first for the second straight contest when Eric Snow drew a walk on a nine-pitch at-bat and then scored from first with two outs on Chase Fralick’s single to right.
Auburn threatened to add to its lead in the top of the fifth when Chris Rembert drew a one-out walk and Bub Terrell followed with a single, but an infield fly and a strikeout ended the rally.
Cade Fisher relieved Auburn starter Andreas Alvarez after a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth. After Coastal Carolina loaded the bases with no outs, Fisher sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around an infield fly to leave the bases loaded, thrilling the Auburn fans among the 7,841 in attendance.
Coastal Carolina threatened once again in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of a hit batter and a walk before Fisher recorded a strikeout and a popup to head to the seventh inning with Auburn clinging to a 1-0 lead. But in Coastal’s next at-bat, the Chanticleers broke through, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game on a leadoff double and an RBI single. CCU scored the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh, capitalizing on a fielding error at first after a slow roller to the mound, ending the outing for Fisher (1-3), who struck out four and allowed only one earned run in 2.2 innings.
In the eighth inning, the Chanticleers added an extra run through a leadoff double and an RBI single, securing the 4-1 victory.
Coastal Carolina (53-11) will take a 23-game winning streak to Omaha for the College World Series.
