Coastal Carolina head baseball coach Gary Gilmore has never been one to brag on his accomplishments. To illustrate that point, he casually mentioned during a conversation on SportsTalk last May that this season would be his last. A tongue-dropping announcement for most—just another day in the life of Coach Gilmore.
But for a man who’s conquered the baseball world with a national championship in 2016 and kept cancer at bay over the past several years, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that he views the 2024 baseball season as any other year.
With that said, Gilmore is not coasting into retirement.
“I throw an hour+ of batting practice about five times a week, so none of that stuff’s changed.” Gilmore stated as a guest of SportsTalk following his team’s 5-4 victory at North Carolina on Tuesday, which snapped the Tar Heels 27-game home winning streak.
And while he remains laser-focused on this year’s team, Gilmore did allow himself a few moments to look ahead to what’s next.
“The hardest thing is going to be on whatever day that I walk out, it will be the last day I’m in charge of that place, and from that point on, you’re basically an outsider. That’s going to be weird. That’s going to be the hardest part,” Gilmore revealed as he took a brief glimpse into the future. “But I’ve got four little grandsons, and I’ve got a wife that has been incredibly loyal and supportive over the years. There’s some other things in my life that I’ve got to do. I’ve got enough health challenges to keep me centered, and I just appreciate everyday feeling good and waking up every morning.”
Fortunately for Gilmore, his team has positioned itself to make another run in the NCAA tournament, but that road gets a little more difficult starting this weekend as Coastal entertains Sun Belt Conference leading Louisiana in a three-game series beginning Friday night in Conway.
