Clemson got off to hot start and kept pouring it on until the game was halted by the ten-run rule in a 13-1 victory over Manhattan at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Tuesday.
Jacob Hinderleider gave the eighth-ranked Tigers an early lead with an RBI single in the first, but that was just the appetizer. Clemson put up a crooked number in its next turn that effectively put the game away. The Tigers pounced for five runs in the second thanks to aggressive baserunning and a rash of Manhattan miscues.
Nathan Hall sparked the rally by stealing second and third following his single to left. Jaspers starter Joseph Duffield plunked Jarren Purify to put two runners aboard. Cam Cannarella’s base hit brought in Hall and Purify came around when the ball was misplayed in center. The next batter, Andrew Ciufo, reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. The ball squirted up the right field line allowing Cannarella to score. Blake Wright’s single advanced Ciufo to third and chased Duffield after recording just four outs. Jimmy Obertop’s sacrifice fly plated Ciufo and Wright came home on Tristan Bisetta’s knock to left-center, making it 6-0. Three of the Tigers’ five runs in the inning were unearned.
Clemson pitching made the early lead stick, giving up just one run on four hits and striking out ten. Southpaw Drew Titsworth (2-0) got the win after 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Titsworth hasn’t surrendered a run in four appearances out of the bullpen.
Wright hit a two-run homer in the fifth and the Tigers added three more unearned runs in the sixth following a passed ball. Clemson (14-1) has won ten straight and scored ten or more runs in five of its fifteen games.
The Tigers and Jaspers are back at it in Game 2 of the series at 4 p.m., Wednesday.
