Daniel WR Trey Wimbley (6-1 180) was offered by Clemson coach Dabo Swinney last month, and he saw no reason to drag his recruiting out for no reason. Like so many Daniel standouts before him, Wimbley on Thursday morning announced his commitment to the Tigers for the 2027 signing class.
Wimbley posted his announcement on social media.
All glory to God!! I will be shutting down my recruitment, IM ALL IN!!!
Besides being a star at nearby Daniel, Wimbley has a deep connection to Swinney and Clemson. His father, Prince Wimbley, was Swinney’s roommate at Alabama. The Wimbleys lived in Birmingham, where Trey attended Briarwood Christian, the same school as Clemson backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina. His dad moved the family to the Upstate a couple of years ago when he joined the athletic department as the Development and Community Outreach Coordinator.
This, however, was not the case of Swinney rewarding the son of a close friend with a scholarship offer. Wimbley emerged this season as a major prospect on his own merit, with other offers from Ole Miss and SMU. Plus, Georgia and Tennessee had also been in touch.
But Wimbley indicated last month, after he had gotten the offer from Swinney, that it would be hard to pass on that opportunity.
I’ve always been coming to Clemson games, and it just hit hard when I heard I got that offer. It just meant the world to me,” Wimbley said. “He just told me how good of a player I am, and he just told me I have an offer to come play at Clemson. He’d love for me to play on his team. They like my top-end speed and how I can break away from players/ They said I have great ball skills and natural ability.”
This season, Wimbley had 57 catches for 1072 yards and 14 touchdowns. As a sophomore, he had 28 catches for 583 yards and eight touchdowns. He also stars on the track and runs the 100 meters, 200 meters, and the 4X100 meter relay. He said his 40 time is in the 4.4-second range.
Wimbley is the fifth commitment for Clemson’s 2027 class.
