Third-ranked Tigers wallop Winthrop 13-3 (AUDIO) #Clemson

No. 3 Clemson continued its stellar play, Tuesday, pummeling Winthrop 13-3 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium for the Tigers’ 14th win in their last 15 games.

Blake Wright and Will Taylor led the barrage, combining for six hits and seven RBI. Clemson managed to score 13 runs on the strength of just two extra-base hits, but the Tigers showed remarkable patience at the dish in drawing nine walks.

Taylor got the party going with a two-run single to right-center in the home half of the first. The following inning, Wright tallied the first of his three RBI with an infield single.

With Clemson up a run in the fourth, Wright (4-4, 3 RBI) singled back up the box to bring in Cam Cannarella and extend Clemson’s lead to 4-2. Three batters later, Taylor plated Wright with a base hit to right field.

The Tigers piled on with a six-run fifth, an inning that included another run-scoring infield single from Wright. Later in the fifth, Taylor (2-3, 4 RBI) picked up his fourth RBI with a bases-loaded walk, the first of four bases-loaded walks in the inning.

The Clemson bullpen was again terrific, holding Winthrop (8-11) to one run in 5.2 innings. Lefthander Jacob McGovern took over in the sixth and struck out the side in his first career appearance. Nathan Dvorsky and Chance Fitzgerald held the Eagles in check with a scoreless inning, apiece, before Luke Brown brought it home with a one-run ninth. Matthew Marchal (4-0) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. 

Clemson (18-2, 2-1) will next take the short trek to Greenville to square off with Presbyterian in non-conference action. First pitch between the Tigers and the Blue Hose at Fluor Field is scheduled for 6 p.m., Wednesday.
