Luke Gaffney homered and drove in four runs as no. 3 Clemson piled on Presbyterian 9-1 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Wednesday.
A day after pushing across just two runs in a loss to Coastal Carolina, the Tigers’ lineup pounced on PC for seven runs in the first four innings. Dominic Listi scored the game’s first run, scoring on Gaffney’s sacrifice fly. Gaffney also drove in the game’s final run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Gaffney sandwiched a two-run home run between the two sac flies, giving the sophomore catcher a career-high four RBI.
It was more than enough for the Clemson pitching staff, which limited the Blue Hose to one run on four hits. Talan Bell fanned two batters and gave up one run in his first career start. Chance Fitzgerald (3-0) picked up the win in relief of Bell, blanking PC for five innings.
Cam Cannarella drove in three runs and Jarren Purify doubled and scored twice, raising his average to .369. Reserve catcher Ty Marshall picked up his first career hit with a line-drive single to center in the eighth, Clemson’s tenth of the game. Tigers’ batters also drew nine walks.
Clemson (24-4, 4-2) will be playing away from home for the first time since March 4th when the Tigers visit 19th-ranked Georgia Tech, Friday. Game 1 of the series in Atlanta is scheduled for 6 p.m.
