Charlotte: Watching the same scenario play out over and over again can become boring. Tedious. Dull. Well, unless you’re a fan of Clemson baseball. The Tigers followed a familiar script, Friday, closing out their stay at the ACC Championship with a come-from-behind 8-7 walk off victory over Louisville.
Jimmy Obertop played the role of hero at Truist Field, hitting a three-run homer to tie it in the eighth before drawing a bases-loaded walk in the ninth to secure his club’s 24th comeback win. Friday’s game had no bearing on Saturday’s semifinals, but neither team looked eager to go 0-2 in Charlotte.
Clemson, likely wanting to wipe the bad taste from Thursday’s loss to Miami (Fl) out of its mouth, started the game poorly and fell behind 6-0. The Tigers’ lineup struggled against Cardinals’ starter Sebastian Gongora, plating just one run through the first five innings. But Clemson began chipping away the third time through the order, scoring three in the sixth to force Louisville into its bullpen.
With Clemson trailing 7-4 entering the bottom of the eighth, Blake Wright (2-5) singled sharply to center and Cam Cannarella (3-3, 3 runs) drew a walk to set the stage for Obertop. The transfer first baseman made his opportunity count, lacing a line drive onto the terrace beyond left field for a three-run homer that knotted the game up, 7-7. Obertop’s shot was just beyond where Tristan Bissetta’s fly ball fell just shy of home run distance, Thursday. One inning later, Obertop finished what he started, walking on four pitches to force in the winning run.
Clemson (41-14) will now turn its attention to the NCAA Selection Show airing at noon, Monday. The Tigers appear to be in good position to land a top-8 national seed, which would mean not only hosting a Regional at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, but also hosting a Super Regional if they advance.
