Byrnes High once sent to South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore, who became one of the program’s all-time greats. Now, the Gamecocks have a chance to land arguably the next best running back to come out of Byrnes since Lattimore in Tre Segarra.
Segarra, on Friday, announced through Rivals the final five schools he will consider. They are USC, Indiana, Stanford, Tennessee and Penn State. Segarra was also offered and recruited by Clemson, but the Tigers did not make his cut.
Neither did other programs that offered, like Florida, Florida State, Syracuse, Maryland, Duke, Michigan, Vanderbilt and Miami.
Segarra was in for games last season, and he was back in Columbia for a recruiting day in early March. He’s also a standout soccer player in high school, and an excellent student.
“My education is important. That’s the way I was raised,” Segarra said last fall. “Life after football is a big thing for me in my recruitment. I want somebody who can also develop me as a football player as well as a person. Somebody who has experience putting guys out. Any football player, the goal is the NFL and that’s where I want to go one day. Also, what’s my life going to look like after that. Those are two things that I look for in my recruitment. I’m big on family. I want my family to be able to come and see me play every once in a while. Those types of things are things that are important to me.”
Like any good running back, Segarra will want his share of touches in the backfield of his choice, but he’s not interested in being a ball hog.
“In my opinion, the future of the running back position is in programs that run the running backs by committee, that don’t have just have one single getting 30 carries a game,” Segarra said. “Keeping yourself healthy, and longevity is also a pretty big thing for me. Programs where they rotate backs and give different guys carries. Also, an atmosphere where I can start young and get experience under my belt at a young age.”
Segarra had already set official visits to Indiana on May 15th, Stanford on May 22nd, Tennessee on June 12th, and to USC on June 19th before releasing his final five.
In his career, Segarra has rushed for 2834 yards and 29 touchdowns.
